DESCRIPTION
The contemporary art system is a complex organization based on an increasing number of players (artists, art critics, museum curators, exhibition supervisors of private and public institutions, art dealers, art collectors, promoters...). Because of this compIexity, a work of art is no longer the action of the single artist, but the result of an interconnection between the actions of various players in the system. The aim of the Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies Masters course, thanks to the cooperation between the LABA of Florence and the EX3 contemporary art centre, is to support artists and curators in their professional integration in the contemporary art system through the study of specific theoretical subjects related to the more current artistic languages and the different players in the artistic system. Practical "on the job" experience will be offered in cooperation with artists, curators, and cultural operators.
WHO IT IS FOR
The Masters course offer top level training for students who have already obtained a 1st level or a 2nd level Diploma in Liberal arts or Humanities, Media Studies, Cultural heritage, Fine Art Academy, Architecture.
AIMS
This Masters course is designed to improve and deepen theoretical and technical competences in visual arts and curatorial studies. The course helps to prepare students to excel in their professional life as artists, cultural operators and curators, through a strong basic training and offers creative support to the highest international professional standars.
DURATION
A six-month course, equal to 60 ETCS (European credit System). The course begins in January and ends in June/July. Curricular lessons will be held from Monday to Friday (afternoon/evenings). Extracurricular activities will be offered in conjunction with the events of the EX3 contemporary art centre. Saturdays may eventually be used for lessons lost, missed due to other activities (internships, workshops, etc.).
ATTENDANCE
Course attendance is reserved for 12 students only. (not less than 8).
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
The 1st level Masters Certificate is officially recognised by the Italian Ministry and Research ( law no 506/77 includes the Laba in the "Comparto Universitario" as High level Artistic Instruction Institution, aligned to European standards). The Masters certificate will be issued to students who will have successfully undertaken the final exams after having completed all the activities.
METHODOLOGY
The study program has theoretical and theoretical/practical seminars. Attendance is compulsory. The first period of study concentrates on the preparation of the foundations of the contemporary art system; the second is dedicated to the interaction with the payers of the system, the elaboration of the professional subjects and to the planning of an exhibition by the artists and/or curators. As well as practical and theoretical modules, the improvement of the action skills in the analytical, relational, planning and organizational processes will be pursued.
Special emphasis is given to visits to art galleries, museums, studios, meetings with famous artists, critics, and business people. In addition, students will be involved in some of the activities of the EX3 Centre, one of the most lively realities in the contemporary exhibition scene.
